A Life of Oddity
Pearl was born and raised in a small town of New Mexico. Her family moved around the Southwest as well as the northern parts of Mexico quite frequently due to her father's job as a business consultant. At the age of three, Pearl had an "imaginary friend" that she was quite attached to. Both parents assumed there was nothing to concerned about since all kids at one point or another create a friend of their own. At the age of six, Pearl hadn't stopped talking to her "friend" to the point where her teachers and peers looked at her strangely. Her parents grew increasingly worried and consulted several therapists in an effort to 'fix' their daughter.When Pearl was asked to describe her imaginary friend, the details lined up closely to a deceased relative of her mother's, someone who she had never met nor heard of until later on when Pearl's mom was sent some old photos in the mail depicting a family reunion from the 60s. Concern only grew when Pearl was heard referring to her imaginary friend by the name of the deceased relative. A priest was called to bless the house and she never saw her "friend" again.There were several other times where Pearl was in contact with people who had been long dead. Most of the time, they were kind spirits. Other times, they were violent and tormented her and her family for weeks on end. Due to her "unnatural" tie with the dead, her parents were fearful for themselves and the spiritual repercussions on the Buentello family. Pearl was forced to move out the moment she turned eighteen, with her older brother, Michael, helping her until she was on her own two feet.Over time, she learned how to cope with her "gift". While she tried to help the spirits that made themselves known to her, there were times where she had to resort to banishment; an exhausting and stressful act that she rarely resorted to performing. Later on, she turned her ability into a service for all who required help regarding the supernatural. Whether it be banishment (under extreme circumstances), helping souls cross over, or simply passing on a message to the living from the dead and vice versa, Pearl was ready to assist.

Reborn
Pearl was taken in the middle of the night by shadow figures of unknown origin. She was thrown off the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and into the river below. She was legally dead for several hours. Pearl’s time of death was assumed to be 2:43 AM. When she emerged, she felt as though she had lived through a nightmare. From her memory, a white, cloaked figure had guided her from the Spirit Realm and back to her washed-up corpse, bestowing her the gift of life, with a few extra benefits. Her research following the event of her reawakening led her to the conclusion that there was more to La Leyenda de La Llorona.Some historians theorized that La Llorona was a curandera, a medicine woman, who was prosecuted by her village, accused of summoning demons to torment the locals and poisoning their crops and farm animals. Her children were the victims of a violent hate crime and were drowned in the Rio Grande. La Llorona attached her spirit to the waters before the end of her life on earth, which is where whispers of a ghostly figure lurking around bodies of water originate from. Some say that La Llorona is the bridge between the spirit realm and the Land of the Living, choosing the fate of those that enter the waters of the river. Why Pearl was spared is what she is refuses to question.

— Her birth name is Mariah. However, she prefers to go by 'Pearl', a nickname given to her by her aunt (related through her mother's side).— Pearl's first name isn't something she reveals to just anyone. She'll avoid the subject as much as possible unless she trusts the other wholeheartedly. It reminds her too much of her old life with her family.— She stands at 5'6".— Her birthday is September 4th, making her a Virgo. Her birthstone is a sapphire.— She's quite clumsy, but she'll do her best to be careful of her surroundings. Expect her to bump her head and trip over her own two feet.— Her mother is Brazilian while her father is Mexican-American.— She misses her family, but she doesn't miss how they treated her growing up.— Pearl stays in contact with her older brother, Michael. He's one of her oldest and closest friends.— When she's nervous, she bites the skin around her nails. When she's angry, she becomes withdrawn and has to step away in order for her to think clearly. When she's sad, she disassociates quite heavily, and her clumsy nature becomes more apparent.— She suffers from chronic anxiety and depression, as well as frequent panic attacks and night terrors, often made worse by the weather. She takes daily medication to keep her healthy, but they can only do so much. She turns to the use of marijuana to make up for what the SSRIs fail to help with.— She also suffers from mild OCD and major PTSD. This includes, but is not limited to, intrusive thoughts, panic attacks, disassociative behavior, reckless behavior, irritability, and heightened reactions.— Llorona resides in her soul, guiding her via whispers only she can hear. She acts as a discerning spirit guide, warning her of suspicious characters and danger. There are other times where Llorona will suggest rather gruesome options. Often, Pearl has to talk herself down from the ledge of violence. Rarely, does she indulge Llorona and her taste for blood. Appealing as they may be, Pearl cannot and will not hurt an innocent person. Therefore, if she goes on a rampage, she focuses her rage on those that truly deserve it; those with unredeemable souls.— Being an empath means she can read people very easily. This comes from living in an emotionally abusive household where she had to walk on eggshells to avoid conflict and be able to tell when someone was about to go off.
